  • Please explain the importance of an efficient supply chain to a retailer, especially a food and grocery retailer?
  • In India, modern food retail formats are still limited to a few cities or regions, thanks to the lack of facilities to support them. The food retail industry in India is not supported by modern food distribution and logistics solutions.

There are inherent inefficiencies and a disintegrated structure in the Food Supply Chain. Studies estimate that 40% of perishable food produced in the country rots during transportation due to the absence of an efficient supply chain.

There is also a complete dearth of organized players who have integrated Distribution Centers for perishables and dry goods as well as a comprehensive logistics infrastructure given the front end needs in retailing and food service.

As markets mature and consumer expectations rise, strong supply chain solutions that will cut through distribution inefficiencies and increase margin would be a necessity for retailers.

Foodland, through it's state of the art Distribution Centers, offers food handling and storage solutions for perishables and other food products, which are temperature sensitive. It has state-of-the-art chiller rooms, freezer rooms, blast freezers and a fleet of atmosphere (temperature & humidity) controlled vehicles for distribution. Foodland utilizes these Distribution Centers to support the retailers / food service operators.

  • How do you ensure that you're maintaining the integrity of your supplies, especially perishables, during & after transportation?
  • Foodland provides inbound and outbound transport services assuring hygienic, pilfer proof and customary separation of products, especially extremely temperature sensitive food cargo, fresh foods, ambient staple foods and non-food cargo. Due to these strict norms with respect to fail-safe storage temperature maintenance and high hygiene standards, there is a rare chance of the food becoming spoiled during transportation.

In addition, there are thorough Quality Checks undertaken both at the time of dispatch, as also at the time of receipt of the food to ensure product integrity.

  • How would you differ from a Cash & Carry model?
  • In a Cash & Carry model the retailer has to go to the sellers doorstep and pick up the products. Our model is more than a Cash & Carry model – all products are delivered to the retailers’ doorstep.
